Tips in the Classroom

Think about children you know, members of your family or children of friends. When you do something that they like or find funny, the first thing they say is, “Do it again.” Later, you will find they will try to mimic it and do it themselves. You should bring that idea into the classroom. Children love to laugh.  Now, you can’t really tickle them and most physical contact should be avoided to stay clear from getting into any trouble with regards to cultural differences. So what other types of things make children laugh?

Funny sounds – Play with your voice. When drilling, why not make your voice really high pitched, then really low pitched. Go really slow, then really fast. Shout or whisper, use your voice to make it fun.

Anything that can be explained or practised with a noise you should embrace. For example, animals should definitely be based on animal noises.

Physical comedy or slapstick – It may not be your idea of funny but kids love slapstick, or physical comedy. If you can introduce comedy into your lesson by playing the clown or the fool you will get the children on your side and they will forget they are learning.

Lead by example – if you want anybody to be foolish, a little silly or imaginative, then you need to lead by example. You should be the first person doing it by making, for example animal impressions (including noises). Making the impressions as caricature and outrageous as possible will result in the children following your example and really getting involved in the class.

Young Learners’ Project

Prepare 3 lessons. One lesson will be planned for a class of 5 – 6-year-old children, the second lesson will be for 8 – 9-year-old children and the final lesson for 11 – 12-year-old children. Each lesson:

will be 30 minutes;

will be based on the same thing;

will show understanding of the unit by taking into account the children’s stage of development;

will be developed to be fun;

will have contingency exercises;

Tips

Think back to your school and to the kind of activities you did when you were a child.

Look on the internet. Remember, you don’t need to show us that you can create wonderful lesson ideas. You need to show us that you can pick suitable lessons for the age group.

Pick a fun subject, it means you have to spend less time worrying about how to make it fun.
